Castledale Coal Drops

The coaldrops at Castledale Station serve the local community. The local coal merchant's business is still thriving, as heating oil is still expensive, as is the conversion to gas fired heating - anyway, most local people prefer their real fire on a winter's night. This part of the model is constructed of balsa wood, with the rails superglued to longtitudinal beams running the length of the drops. The fence at the edge of the coaldrops has been deliberately distressed.

The wooden buffers at the end of the drops are prototypical and based on those at Alnwick. The yard is ballasted with 'block jointing sand' and painted grey. The coal in the 21ton hopper wagons is real coal, finely crushed and superglued onto an expanded polystyrene former which can be removed if required. The hopper wagons are Hormby and have been lightly weathered with an airbrush.
