Tunnels

View from car park

Tunnels are always a useful way of providing a scenic break where track enters a fiddle yard. Many of the lines in the Sunderland area were below ground level, sometimes in quite deep cuttings, so in this case, the use of the tunnels is prototypical. By the 1960s, there was a rapid decline in routes as the coal trade began to wane; the 'haunted' tunnel would have been a typical feature. Note the multi-story car park at the top of the picture - a sign of the times and an obvious threat to remaining passenger services.

Because of the camera angle, the fiddle yard is just visible through the modern tunnel.
