Monkwearmouth Station Ticket Office
The Edwardian Ticket Office was furnished in the original style, with many historic artifacts telling a story of times gone by.
Tickets for most destinations were kept in the racks seen in this photograph. Tickets were made of stiff card, usually about 5cm. x 2.5cm. and were clipped by a hand operated machine seen to the left of the right hand grill. If there wasn't a pre printed ticket for your destination, the booking clerk would write a travel warrant by hand. This would be carefully scrutinised by the guard on the trains used.
